Group progammed for big success

A COMPUTER program provided the ideal name for a new band who have just released their first single.

SF-Control, alias Lynda and Roland Alderson and Derek Vann (pictured) are hoping the double A-side single will secure them a recording deal.

SF-Control are relatively young, formed at the end of 1989, but already its original material is going down well. Band member Lynda, describes the group's sound as being a mixture of rock, pop and dance music. She plays bass and programmes the drum machine while husband Roland plays synthesizer and Leicester-based Derek adds the vocals and guitar.

Despite the obvious electronic input, Linda is at pains to point out that the band is not just another synthesizer group. And she adds: No-one has yet been able to pin us down to sounding like any one group - we hope we are creating our own sound. SF-Control's single, Sirens / His Master's Ways. will be available free when the group launches it at Esquires night club in Bedford on Sunday June 23.

SF's sounds are just out of this world

SF Control are out of this world

THERE'S no stopping local band SF-Control now they're back on the music scene and making a bid for the top.

For after five years off the stage and away from the limelight, Lynda and Roland Alderson and Derek Vann are suffering withdrawal symptoms, and even more eager to keep going. SF-Control, a rock/pop band resembling a cross between early Duran Duran and Yes, were forced to split because one member lived in Scotland and the traveling tore them apart.

Now they're back in full wing and full rhythm and have just pressed their first record - a double A-side called The Sirens and His Masters Ways. We're really working hard and putting a lot of time into it this time, If people had been indifferent to our music. I don't think we would have bothered. said 28-year-old Lynda.

But so many people have said they really like our stuff, it's really given us the drive to make it big. If you would like to sample some of SF-Control's sounds, you can buy their new record at their gigs. The next one is Esquires, Greyfriars, Bromham Road, Bedford on June 23. They play the Lady Owen Arms in Islington on July 14 and The Rock Garden in Covent Garden on July 21.

A NEW band is aiming to top the charts with the release of a first single.

The record will mean excitement for both the band, SF-Control, and its record producers, The Grid Studios, in Luton. The single, a double 'A' release called Sirens/His Masters Ways will be the studio's first, on its new record label, and comes out on Saturday. There are three band members, all in their late twenties. Roland plays synthesizers Lynda plays the bass and Derek is the guitarist/singer. The band members write all their own material and all three are song writers.

Talking about the music, Lynda who works at Rothamsted Experimental Station in Harpenden said: The controlling power bass and hardcore dance electronic drums provide drive to vicious guitar and moody vocals ,synths flood and spin a hypnotic web of dreams. She added: Some people have said we're a little bit like early Duran Duran, Pink Floyd an Genesis.

Their main influences stem from Indie bands such as New Order and they believe that the best way to achieve things in the music world is to take notice of other up and coming bands. Lynda said: We go to lots of other gigs. which we believe keeps us in touch with what's going on. The band scene is competitive, but in a friendly way. SF-Control was first set up five years ago when the band also had a drummer. They have a number of gigs coming up to launch the single.

And the line-up which will play in the car park under the flyover at Chapel Street is drawn from just about the widest possible spectrum of modern music. The bands who have been recruited by Paul Jolly of Luton Arts Centre are Skyjuice, Click Click, SF-Control, Madrigal and Turkish Delight.

Paul of course will be playing as saxophonist for Skyjuice. One of Luton's favorite bands. Skyjuice started as a lovers' rock outfit but while reggae still plays a big part in influencing the music, the band have developed their own style over the years. Paul will be joined by guitarist Colin Land, bassist John Boyle, drummer Martin Norton, percussionist and toaster Mick Davis and, hopefully the new vocalist for whom Skyjuice have been advertising. One of the area's newest bands is Turkish Delight. The festival will be one of the first gigs the band will play although they were on the road for a couple of years with different line-ups as the Statics.

There line-up is Eric on guitar, Dennis on drums, Dave Hannah bass synth and Lol on keyboards and vocals. At the moment, Turkish Delight are still writing material and working towards a style of there own. Lol won't be the only girl in the line-up; Lynda Orbel, 22 is the bass player for SF^Control. Lynda comes from Dunstable and works at Don Larking's Studio in Luton, is joined by guitarist and vocalist Derek Vann, 22, from Leicester who is an insurance salesman; drummer Dave Stewart, 27, a Glaswegian who is a computer programmer and Roland Alderson, 25, who is a freelance graphic designer. The band evolved about four months ago from a combination of the Roarr, Jo Lystroda, Galaxy and Personal Column. Lynda said that SF^Control should have been called TF Control after a computer program being worked on by Dave. but when Roland came to design the logo, the band reckoned SF looked better!.

Said Lynda: Now everybody thinks we're something to do with Science Fiction but as we call our music New Rock it's worked out well. The band draw from there own influences- Roland likes any synth music. Lynda Human League and some jazz funk, Derek some 60's sounds and Dave Squeeze and Dire Straits. They add there own touches to the music and - voila! - there's SF^Control! Brother's Derek and Adrian Smith, also known as Click Click, will be providing synthesizer music with the help of a tape machine. But anybody expecting music in the Tears For Fears mode is going to be disappointed. Said Derek, who is the drummer: Our music is not soft, wet, wimpy and safe. We are trying to head synthesizer music forward and not backward as so many band seem to be doing. As well as making music. Derek also provides it. He and a friend Rick take over Doubles in Park Street each Saturday night to run the Stingray Club.

It's not a disco as such- The dance floor is small and we're not dependant on dancing for entertainment, says Derek- but a place where people can come together to listen to music- from Cabaret Voltaire to T.Rex - or just talk if they want. There are even two rooms set aside with noting but tables and chairs where people can go purely to talk. The hard rock side of the festival will be provided by Madrigal, who started life as one half of the now defunct Dying Sun. Drummer Mark Compton and bassist Paul Meaton have been joined by guitarist Paul Fittes and vocalist John Nicholson, while keyboardist Amanda Daines is currently on trial. Said Mark: We played our first gig at the Wheatsheaf recently and it was a bit of a disaster. Paul's bass went wrong and he had to sit it out while the rest of us played on. But the crowd were very sympathetic. We were only half as good as we can be but we'll be OK on Monday

DISTANCE, they say, lends enchantment- but not if you live in Leicester and the band for which you play is based in Luton area.

That's the problem facing SF-Control, one of the bright new bands in the local scene. Singer/guitarist Derek Vann, who is an insurance salesman in Leicester, is finding the distance too much and is reluctantly having to quit the group. Nett result? The other members- bassist Lynda Orbell, synth player Roland Alderson and drummer Dave Stewart - are on the look out for a replacement.

Said Lynda: We're doing two or three gigs with Derek but then we'll need a replacement. Whoever we get, it would help if they could write the lyrics. Lynda added that SF-Control - who were formed at the beginning of the year out of the remains of the Roarr, Jo Lystroda, Galaxy and Personal Column - are popular rock-based, synth-oriented band - definitely not heavy rock. The members write their own material an if you think you are suitable replacement for Derek, Phone either Dave or Roland. Meanwhile, you can see SF Control at the Cottars, Marsh Farm, on November 27, and the Wheatsheaf, Dunstable the next day.
